10 questions with Grant Hill

Interview by Justin Brown

Grant Hill is one of the most promising young players in the NBA. He is known as a great athlete, not only due to his tremendous talent, but because he is a team player. In addition, he is a nice person. His consistent play has not gone unnoticed. As of this Sunday, he will have started in 3 All-Star games. In January, he was named the NBA player of the month. This summer he played on Dream Team 3, and was arguably the best player on the gold-medal winning team. Teen interviewer Justin Brown asks Grant Hill 10 important questions.

Justin Brown-Why did you want to go to the Pistons over the Mavericks in 1994?

Grant Hill- I was just happy to know that I would be drafted into the NBA. Yes, it's true some teams offer more desirable situations than others and I was fortunate to be able to come to Detroit. Especially looking back. Things have gone very well for me here. But we still need to win a championship.

JB-What changes has your team undergone since 1994?

GH-Our team has been almost completely reworked since 1994. The only players still here that were here when I was drafted are Joe Dumars, Lindsey Hunter, and Terry Mills.

JB-What are the Pistons prospects in the playoffs this year?

GH- We hope to keep playing well though the rest of the season and get some home court advantage into playoffs. If we do that, we can hope to make some noise, but you never know. We just need to keep working hard.

JB-What personal goals have you set for this year?

GH- My only personal goals are to play as well as I can and to improve in all aspects of my game. I have set no specific numbers to average or awards to win.

JB-What aspect of the Pistons strategy has enabled them to excel this year? Is it the cohesiveness on the court, or the defense?

GH- Nearly everyone would agree that our strongest qualities are our defense and our team chemistry. But it takes good chemistry and knowledge of one's game to play well as a unit on the defensive end. And the more we succeed defensively, the more confident we will become in one another.

JB-Do you think the Pistons have a chance at the championship over the next 3 years?

GH- As long as us young players keep improving and we can continue to keep our nucleus together, we may have a chance. But there are some great teams out there to contend with.

JB-What was it like participating in the Olympics this year? What emotion did you feel when you won the gold medal?

GH- The Olympics was a great thrill, one that I will never forget. The entire atmosphere - playing for the United States, in Atlanta - was a tremendous thrill. And standing on the medal stand, knowing that we won a gold medal for the United States gave me a great sense of pride. And yes, it gives you goosebumps.

JB- How has the Olympics affected your game this year?

GH- My game has improved as a result of the Olympics, and not so much because of the Olympics, but because of the practices that we had leading up to the Olympics. I played one-on-one against the best players in the world everyday and I came to some sort of realization that I am as good (or better) than they are. That newfound confidence has done wonders for my game.

JB- What is your opinion of the free-agent situation over the summer?

GH- The free-agency situation is just a product of what this game is coming to, and it makes winning a championship even more difficult because I think teams need to stay together to win and that is hard with all the money flying around offering players the chance to go anywhere.

I think Grant Hill has unlimited potential that he has begun to realize through hard work. His numbers and stats will only improve over the next few years. His work ethic and confidence will allow him to excel to the highest levels. The Pistons will become the team to watch. In the near future the Pistons could dominate the Eastern Conference. Their leader, none other than #33 Grant Hill.
